Arthur Beaumont 1890 to 1978 "Impetuous and adventurous- one guesses from the fresh, free character of his work- he sees and feels with excitement and records with nervous freshness of line and color...Ships, it is clear, are no mere academic acquaintance of this painter. Rather one suspects he is a sailor who cannot contain his delight in ships and so bursts out as an artist." Los Angeles Times, 3 January 1932
U.S.S. Constitution Past and Present, 1934 Watercolor on paper, Sight 36 x 24in. Collection USS Constitution Museum
"Beauty , realism, nostalgia, inspiration, adventure...what is in the eye of the beholder as he comes to admire and even covet a fine painting? These are some of the same qualities sea-going men come to cherish in the sea itself. Fortunate is the man who has the talent to paint ships at sea which gain the approbation of artists and critics and at the same time create a realistic and inspiring work that satisfies hypercritical sailors. Arthur Beaumont has received resounding acclamation from both his artistic peers and sailors for his many superb paintings. This exhibition affords an unusual opportunity for both expert and layman to partake of the magic of the sea." Admiral Arleigh Burke (U.S.N. Retired), Chief of Naval operations 1953-1961
Collector's Registry Notice Arthur Edwaine Beaumont (1890-1978) focused his long career as a painter portraying the history of the United States Navy, beginning in 1932 until the time of his death in 1978. Numerous renderings of naval (and civilian) subjects are found in official naval collections, museum collections, and many private collections around the world. An illustrated biography of the life and artworks of Arthur Beaumont is currently in preparation, and is due to be published by the Irvine Museum, in Irvine California in 2005. Beau's paintings and drawings are currently being evaluated for possible inclusion in the book. The family is seeking to ascertain the location of his paintings and drawings as part of the book evaluation process. The Beaumont estate archives contain references to the original owners and most of the ships he painted. However, with the passage of time, many of these important works have changed hands and the current owner's names and addresses have changed, sometimes several times. If you currently possess an original Beaumont artwork, or you may have knowledge of where originals may be located, we would be most appreciative if you would take the time to provide the Beaumont Estate, through this website, with detailed information for inclusion in the central registry. You may specify that any information that you supply may be added to the registry and published on the website, or you may mark the information as confidential and the information will be stored in the registry, but not published on the website The Arthur Beaumont Estate hopes that the portions of the registry that are approved for publication by the information provided, will serve as a primary source information for interested parties trying to locate paintings and drawings of specific ships. The website registry information is intended to be a primary research resource for U.S. Naval personnel (past and present), to their families, to art collectors, and to parties interested in naval history recorded by the Navy's most prolific artist. If you have current information regarding the location of Beaumont paintings or drawings, we invite you to assist us in expanding and updating the registry. Please review the registry information request section and provide the information requested. We wish to thank you in advance of assisting the Arthur Beaumont Estate in compiling this registry. We sincerely hope that you will be able to attend one of the traveling exhibitions when they commence in 2005.
